Third Spaces
Third spaces: some of the most important places in a young person's life are neither home nor school.
A gym can be one of them.
Third spaces are where young people encounter different people, ideas, expectations, and versions of themselves.
Waypoint Basketball should be one of those spaces. Here is where I want it to go.
The Long-Term Vision
A place of our own.
Long term, I have an aspiration to build a basketball court at my own home and make it meaningfully available to the players who come through Waypoint.
Not as a private amenity, but as a place where they can work on their games, get shots up, spend time together, and have access to a safe, familiar environment outside of formal practices and tournaments.
A place for summer workouts, pickup games, shooting competitions, team meals, conversations, and the kind of unstructured time where relationships are built.
Access matters.
If Waypoint can eventually provide another court, another gathering place, and another trusted environment where players know they are welcome and expected to carry themselves the right way, then that space becomes part of the program itself.
What the space is for
Basketball brings us together.
Basketball may be what brings us together, but the objective is an environment where players can compete, learn, talk, ask questions, build relationships, and experience more of the world around them.
That is why travel should mean more than:
Hotel → Gym → Tournament → Home
See cities.
Visit museums.
Meet professionals.
Sit down with business owners.
Hear from people whose lives look different from their own.
Eat together. Talk together.
Spend time around responsible adults who expect something from them.
And development should not require a scheduled practice, a paid trainer, or a tournament weekend. Sometimes it happens in the unstructured hours: extra shots up, talking after practice, watching an older player work, sitting around a table with teammates.
Not every meaningful lesson happens in a classroom.
Not every important conversation happens during practice.
Sometimes a young person simply needs another room to walk into, and another group of people who expect them to grow.
Waypoint should be one of those places.
